Raven Scenes

Corvus Corax, the Raven of science is, along with the Crow, the most intelligent of all birds.  They are problem solvers, tool makers, they mate for life and take exceptional care of their young.

They also speak in many voices, not just the normal “caw” but soft murmurs especially to their young and even you if you sit quietly and listen, for they have much to tell. The Raven of legend, to the indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest “Raven” was a most important character.

He is a teacher, spirit guide and like coyote, a trickster.  To the Haida People of Haida Gwaii (the area the white man calls The Queen Charlette Islands) Raven found the first people in a clam shell on Niakun beach.

He also played the role of Prometheus (from Greek Mythology) in that he took care of his people by bringing them the sun, fire and knowledge by stealing “The Ma” from the Gods, a box in which the God’s kept all of these things.

However, unlike Prometheus he was not caught as he was a “Shape Shifter” and was never found.
His gift divided day from night and gave people fire to heat their homes and cook their food.

In my paintings I try to display some of the elements of his character and he gifts he brought to his people.
